COLUMBUS, OH – July 16, 2021 –SUMMER614, Columbus’ largest and most complete urban music festival celebrating R&B, and hip-hop from yesterday and today is back at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons on Saturday, August 14. Celebrating year four, festival organizer and founder Bobby Ferguson is ready for the best concert and party yet.
“I am happy to be bringing this summer celebration back in a time when we as a Columbus community need something positive,” said Ferguson. “There has been so much strife over the past year, this is an opportunity to set that aside and celebrate with great music in a peaceful, fun-loving, and upbeat atmosphere.”
The lineup includes a variety of R&B and hip-hop hitmakers from the 80’s-early 2000’s including: Rappers Ja Rule, Too $hort, and Mike Jones and R&B artists Donell Jones, and Keke Wyatt.
Ja Rule: As one of the stars of The Inc. label, Ja Rule is a multi-platinum rapper with numerous hit singles under his belt. Ja Rule was one of the rap industry’s most commercially successful artists during the early 2000’s. He started his career with featured verses on songs such as Jay-Z’s “Can I Get A…”, followed by his own chart topping singles “Holla Holla”, “I Cry,” and “Between Me and You”. Ja Rule has proven himself to be a versatile artist by not only writing for his own albums, but as a contributor to projects by R&B group Jagged Edge and Jennifer Lopez.
Donell Jones: American Music Award Winner, Donell Jones is a renowned R&B vocalist, an exceptional songwriter, and a master producer. Over the last 25 years, the multifaceted artist has had many chart-topping hits, including unforgettable classic ballads that are fan favorites like “Where I Wanna Be,” “You Know What’s Up ft. TLC’s Left Eye,” and “Knocks Me Off My Feet,” just to name a few. Coming off the heels of the 2020 release of the album “100% Free” (the first in seven years) the smooth-talking lyricist is back and will treat the audience to his fun and unique R&B sound.
Keke Wyatt: In 2001 Keke Wyatt garnered national attention after her successful collaboration with fellow R&B singer Avant. In 2002, her rendition of “Nothing in This World” led to a nomination for the Best New R&B/Soul/Rap Artist award at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. In her career, Wyatt released four official studio albums, including “Soul Sista” (2001), “Who Knew?” (2010), “Unbelievable” (2011), and her latest and recent release, “Rated Love” (2016). All of these albums charted prominently on Billboard, as did her first and only EP release, “Ke’Ke’” (2014). Wyatt has also released a number of charting singles, with her lead single “Sexy Song,” from the album “Rated Love,” peaking at number 29 on the Adult R&B Songs chart.
Mike Jones: “Mike Jones, who?” Any fan of Mike Jones knows this catchphrase that has become the trademark of the popular southern hip-hop artist. Jones first reached national fame in 2004 with the release of his breakout single “Still Tippin’.” Jones went on to release his debut studio album in 2005 “Who Is Mike Jones?.” The album peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 and went certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and set the path for Jones’ successful career.
Too $hort: A pioneer of West Coast hip-hop, Too Short, stylized Too $hort, hit the scene in the 80’s and has been active for almost 4 decades. With over 20 studio albums under his belt, he’s truly an original and the only rapper known to have recorded with 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z. He’s solidified himself as an iconic figure in the hip-hop landscape by continually releasing music and collaborative projects like his most recent 2020 release of “Ain’t Gone Do It/Terms and Conditions” with artist E-40.
